Katherine Greene
My paintings are a journey to an unknown place. Each piece starts as a puzzle or a mystery, with intriguing paths to follow. There is no plan. I don’t always know where I am going. As I listen to my inner voice I begin to discover what is not visible.

For the past few years I have been moving toward a mindfulness way of living: being fully aware and tuned into what is going on right now, aka, present moment awareness. It is definitely a process, and introduces new challenges every minute of every day. It influences the way I paint. With an empty mind, I rely on my intuition to guide my actions.

My approach involves experimenting, exploring and searching, which takes me into a place of not knowing and where every move I make creates the next possibility. The canvas then begins to communicate its wishes, not in words or feelings, but with some kind of energy, the energy of action.

Space is part of the overall design in my work. I include space both as energy and as emptiness, in order to create a whole that is more than a sum of the parts. The paintings continue to the edges and beyond, creating a window into the unknown. As in meditation, there is a pause between the in and out breath. This is the space – a moment of stillness.

While my art is about growth and self-discovery, my paintings have a life of their own, as I seek a balance between trying to control and letting it just happen. I hope that they stir your emotions, lift your spirits, and take you on your own personal journey.
